It’s that time of year again; finally the sun is out and beaming down on our golden highlights and olive skin, or at least our well-crafted imitations of them. But as the sun comes out and we strip back the layers it’s also time to reassess our makeup bags. Our skin is no longer dull and pasty and our foundation choice should embrace this summery radiant hue.

When it comes to our food, we all know that organic is best but surely that can’t be the same for our makeup regime? Surely mineral makeup can’t withstand the sweaty gym session? Or a full day in the clammy office? Or can it?

It would seem that our little British home grown brand Neal’s Yard is playing with the big boys. The image above shows Neal’s Yard’s mineral foundation as one of Vogue beauty’s top powders, well when I found this out I just had to investigate for myself…

My skin is normal to oily and prone to the odd blemish. At first I was hesitant to use mineral foundation as I was used to the high coverage of liquid foundation but my intrigue outweighed my doubts. I have a warm skin tone with yellow undertones and the shade that suited me was called medium warm, number 5 of the 6 shades. Although I found a colour that matched my skin tone, all of the shades are quite light and therefore unfortunately would not be suitable for deeper skin tones. At £22.50 for 14g the product is reasonably priced- considering it is the cheapest of its contenders on the Vogue sheet.

The foundation can be purchased with an accompanying Kabuki brush, which is used to buff it in to the skin, as the product warms it releases the natural oils and minerals. I would recommend buying this brush, priced at £16 it is reasonably priced for a good quality brush; however, cheaper alternatives can be purchased as all that is needed is a wide stiff ended brush. A makeup artist friend of mine and I both agreed that we loved the way that the product looked on our noses. In the T- zone the nose can often become shiny and I am prone to getting blackheads, since using the product which I have been using daily for a number of months now my blackheads are barely visible- even without makeup!! The result of the foundation on the nose is that it reduced oily shine without being too matt and replaced it with a fresh luminous glow, created by the mica particles in the foundation which reflect the light.

A medium amount of coverage can be achieved by laying the product but it alone cannot cover blemishes or dark under eye circles. I use it combined with the YSL highlighter ‘Touche Eclat’ to cover my blemishes and dark under eye circles. The foundation is durable and lasts the whole day, it also works as a powder so no need to use powder on top or have to retouch during the day- bonus.

This foundation doesn’t look like you are wearing a nice foundation; it just gives the appearance of smooth, silky, healthy skin. It is so light that it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything at all. If you are worried about the coverage but still want the results it can be used as a finishing powder on top of liquid foundations.

Since trialing this product I have made it my everyday foundation, and I believe that the overall appearance of my skin has improved as a result; however, for special occasions I still stick to my holy grail of foundations ‘Chanel Vitalumiere aqua’.
